Control of splicing. Control of splicing. Cis acting elements, such as exon splicing enhancer sequences (ESE), exon splicing silencers (ESS), intron splicing silencers (ISS), and intron splicing enhancers (ISE) are bound by trans-acting elements (splicing factors, SF) that facilitate or repress splicing. At the 3′ end of the intron, a consensus AG splice site is preceded by a polypyrimidine (pY) tract and a branch point that requires a consensus splice site (YNYURAY, R = purine, U = uridine). The complex of factors bound to the 5′ splice site (gray region) interacts with the complex bound to the 3′ site (gray region) to induce and regulate splicing. David O. Bates et al.
