1 FILM & LITERATURE OF MICE AND MEN

2 DAILY JOURNAL (29 Nov) Share your thoughts on the relationship between George and Lennie. Is this a classic relationship of hero and sidekick? Clip 1 (13:15~20:33)

3 ABOUT THE AUTHOR: JOHN STEINBECK
John Steinbeck ( ) was a voice for working classes & minorities, especially in Depression-era USA Winner of 1962 Nobel Prize - controversial In addition to Of Mice and Men (1937), wrote The Grapes of Wrath (1939), The Pearl (1947), East of Eden (1952)

4 OF MICE AND MEN - BACKGROUND
Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men set in Depression-era USA (1930s) About 2 migrant workers (George & Lennie) who travel from farm to farm as laborers Migrant labor still used today – leads to immigration conflicts In 1930s, migrant workers were considered unreliable, dangerous; their lifestyles targets of suspicion Novel notorious in its time for its portrayal of a mentally-disabled man as a main (and sympathetic) character

5 QUIZ QUESTION: What do the stories on the slide all have in common with one another?

6 LITERATURE CIRCLE In your group, share the notes you took for the 1st part of Of Mice and Men. Listen to others’ contributions & feel free to add ideas of your own Add this question to your discussion: Of Mice and Men was considered scandalous in its time, and was banned in many areas. Why do you think this happened? What might have been upsetting about it? Clip 2 (30:55~32:17)

7 CENSORSHIP IN FILM & BOOKS
Said Oscar Wilde, “The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.” Censorship is the suppression of material thought by authorities to be immoral, threatening, or in some way unacceptable

8 CENSORSHIP IN FILM & BOOKS
Throughout history, people have rebelled against books/movies they saw as subversive or offensive in some way Consider the examples that follow… Mass burning of Harry Potter books – New Mexico, USA, 2001

9 SEXUAL CONTENT / VIOLENCE
Lolita (1956) about a relationship between a middle-aged man & the pre-teen girl A Clockwork Orange (1962) about youth gangs that menace a future London

10 PROFANITY / CORRUPTION OF MINORS
Gone with the Wind (1939) included use of word ‘damn’, considered scandalous at the time James and the Giant Peach (1961) – movie version had a spider licking her lips; thought in one Wisconsin town as having a ‘double meaning’

11 RACISM / RELIGION To Kill a Mockingbird (1961) about a southern US lawyer defending an African-American man accused of raping a white woman – the accused being the sympathetic character The Lord of the Rings ( ) includes non-Christian, pagan religious elements

12 CENSORSHIP IN FILM & BOOKS
Censorship dependent on content of book/film as well on context (place & time of publication/release) Consider the stories we’ve discussed this semester. Which do you think may have been ‘scandalous’ and subject to censorship? On what grounds? Sexual content, violence, profanity, corruption of minors, racism, religion…other? What is your own view of censorship in Korea or elsewhere?
