LESSONS LEARNT Carrying out a separate G17 design approval / appraisal for the preheater itself is meaningless The pipework within the unit should be classified as a ‘pressure vessel’ (not as a ‘pipe’, Hence relevant design standards apply). Future projects should consider if this is ‘over engineered’ to save Capital. NB PSSR Inspections can be carried out without the need to remove all heating panels. The ‘gas’ side of the hotcat shall not be considered a confined space unless it is accessed via only one single leaf door while the others remain closed. As such, this option for access will not be made appropriate for maintenance staff and the unit shall not be considered to be a confined space. Future projects should consider if this is ‘over engineered’ to save Capital. The gas side of the hotcat shall be considered to be a Zone 2 Hazardous area. Commissioning is simple and short in duration (5 days max.).
