to support your practice & development
CPD works to support your practice & development
2
Space to reflect for action...
Why am I here? What do I want to get out of the session?
3
Session outcomes Know what support & resources are available from CSP to support individual CPD Contribute to the ongoing development of CSP’s CPD resources
4
CPD: a personal journey of learning & development
5
What is CPD? Process of lifelong learning that enables us to maintain, build and develop our knowledge, skills and behaviours – as a person, & as employee, & CSP member Outcomes-based approach to CPD – show how learning changes my practice Any activity/experience could become a learning opportunity…depending on how I use it Why not watch the short video pod-casts on CSP’s website for more information?
6
CPD – supportive tools HPC’s standards for CPD
CSP’s Code of members’ professional values and behaviour CSP’s standards (in press) CSP’s Physiotherapy Framework
7
Behaviours, knowledge & skills for CPD
Assess personal learning & development needs & preferences; Develop & engage in a personalised plan designed to meet those needs; Reflect on the learning process; Document process You will find resources to help you develop these b/k/s in CSP’s CPD webfolio
8
planning, recording & evaluating My learning
9
Using reflective practice...
‘An active persistent & careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the grounds that support it & the further conclusion to which it tends’ (Dewey, 1933)
10
... to learn from doing (Kolb, 1984)
Concrete experience Asking how Reflective observation Plan action using general principles Cowan (1998) Active experimentation Formation of abstract conceptions & generalisations Analysing why 10
11
Timing of reflection Reflection on action, & in action (Schön, 1997)
Reflection for action (Cowan, 1998) Tools to support planning, recording & evaluation of learning are available in CSP’s ePortfolio & CPD Series in Frontline
12
Recording my learning Format depends on nature of learning opportunity & my personal preferences for recording information; Record should provide enough information for me to show how a learning opportunity links to my current/future practice (issues around confidentiality/data protection); Dated (when learning took place, when record created & when learning was/will be evaluated); Easy to access/stored securely
13
Portfolio: presenting evidence of the impact of my learning
14
Qualities of a portfolio
a set of data (evidence & information) collated by an individual that provides evidence of their behaviours, knowledge, & skills evidence can be developed from a range of learning experiences: formal ↔ informal personal flexible content/presentation–to reflect interests/requirements of the audience Sample portfolios are available to read in the CPD webfolio
15
CSP resources to support CPD
CSP networks e.g. ERNs/Country Boards, PNs, working groups/committees iCSP Frontline CPD Series CSP Library & Information Services CSP ePortfolio (includes CPD webfolio & Physiotherapy Framework resources) Championing CPD project
16
Reflection on action - for action...
What did I gain from this session? Does this match the list I made at the beginning of the session? How will I apply my learning in practice? How will I evaluate the impact of this learning on my practice? When will I conduct that evaluation? How could I meet any unmet learning needs?
