1 Process for Developing Effective Functional, Routines-Based IFSPs
Complete a family assessment to identify the family’s concerns, priorities, resources, and routines including the child’s engagement and success in the family’s routines. Assess the child’s skills and interests in the real life contexts and routines of family, culture and community (functional assessment across the three early childhood outcome areas) with consideration of the developmental guidelines/standards and natural learning opportunities for the child’s age. Document a comprehensive picture of the child’s strengths and needs across the three outcome areas, using all sources of information including present levels of development and functional performance. Assess and report ongoing progress towards achieving child and family outcomes. Identify individualized early intervention services, supports, and linkages to enhance the child’s development and build the family’s and/or caregiver’s capacity. Describe evidence-based strategies, activities and/or learning opportunities to accomplish each functional routines-based outcome with observable, measurable criteria. Based on comprehensive child and family assessment, develop measureable, functional, routines-based outcomes consistent with the family’s priorities and concerns and aligned with developmental guidelines/standards. HANDOUT - This graphic depicts a dynamic process for creating Functional, Routines-Based IFSPs.
