1 Can We Tell Physical Changes from Chemical Changes?
Certain materials are included under the fair use exemption of the U.S. Copyright Law and have been prepared according to the multimedia fair use guidelines and are restricted from further use.

2 Tomorrow, during our lab investigation, you may see some or all of the following changes. You must be able to tell the physical changes from the chemical changes. Can you do it today?

3 Physical Property A descriptive term, describing an object. A property or characteristic that helps you identify an object.

4 Chemical Property A property or characteristic that describes one substances ability to react with another substance.

5 What is a Chemical Change?
A chemical change is a change in which a new substance with new properties is formed.

6 What is a Chemical Change?
A chemical change is a change in which a new substance with new properties is formed.

7 What is a Physical Change?
A physical change is a change in which a no new substance is formed, but properties may be changed.

8 What is a Physical Change?
A physical change is a change in which no new substance is formed, but properties may be changed.

9 If you see a change in color, then you’re observing a physical change…
Ask yourself: Is a new substance formed?

10 If color changes, then you’re observing a physical change…

11 If you observe a change in shape, then you’re observing a physical change…

12 If shape changes, then you’re observing a physical change…

13 If you observe a change in size, then you’re observing a physical change…

14 If size changes, then you’re observing a physical change…

15 If you observe a change in state, then you’re observing a physical change…

16 If state changes, then you’re observing a physical change…

17 If you observe fizzing, then you will know that a chemical change is occurring…

18 If you observe fizzing, then you will know that a chemical change is occurring…

19 If you observe bubbling (not due to boiling), then you will know that a chemical change is occurring…

20 If you observe bubbling (not due to boiling), then a chemical change is occurring…

21 If you see or smell burning, then you know that a chemical change is occurring…

22 If you observe burning, then a chemical change is occurring…

23 If you observe explosions because of burning, then a chemical change is occurring…

24 If you observe explosions because of burning, then a chemical change is occurring…

25 If you observe explosions because of too much air being pressed into too small a place, then a physical change is occurring…

26 If you observe explosions because of too much air, then a physical change is occurring…

27 If you observe cooking, then a chemical change is occurring…

28 If you observe cooking, then a chemical change is occurring…

29 If you observe cooling when you did not add cooling on purpose (such as a refrigerator), then a chemical change is occurring…

30 If you observe cooling without refrigeration, then a chemical change is occurring…

31 If you observe cooling because refrigeration was added, then a physical change is occurring…

32 If you observe cooling because refrigeration was added, then a physical change is occurring…

33 If you observe warming without the use of fire or a heater, then a chemical change is occurring…

34 If you observe warming without the use of fire or a heater, then a chemical change is occurring…

35 If you observe warming because you added fire or a heater, then a physical change is occurring…

36 If you observe warming with the use of fire or a heater, then a physical change is occurring…

37 If you observe new matter being made, then a chemical change is occurring…

38 If you observe new matter being made, then a chemical change is occurring…

39 Evidence of Physical Change
Change of Color Change of Shape Change of Size Change of State

40 More Evidence of Physical Change
Lowering of Temp because of refrigeration Raising of Temperature because of heating

41 Evidence of Chemical Change
Change of Matter Heat w/o adding it Cooling w/o adding it Fizzing Bubbling

42 Tomorrow, you will conduct an investigation.
During the investigation, you will observe both physical and chemical changes. You must decide which are which.

43 Get out the yellow lab report and the white answer sheet.
For the rest of the period, please fill in answers, up through the hypothesis, on the white sheet. PLEASE DO NOT write on the yellow sheet.
