2 What is stress? Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition:
“A state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life, work” “Something that causes strong feelings of worry or anxiety” Other definitions: Any change you encounter Wear and tear on the body The inability to cope with problems The loss of emotional control The lack of inner peace

3 3 types of stress 1. Eustress (Good Stress)
Ex. Getting a promotion or falling in love 2. Neustress (Neutral Stress) Ex. News of an earthquake in Chile It’s not that it isn’t important, it just doesn’t have as intense of an effect on you. 3. Distress (Bad Stress) Work overload or death of a loved one

4 What exactly is techno-stress?
Falls under the category of “Future Shock”: Stress that accompanies a proliferation of change (technology, urban sprawl, and information) According to the Oxford Dictionary, “Techno-Stress” is: “Stress or psychosomatic illness caused by working with computer technology on a daily basis”

5 Symptoms of techno-stress
• Expectations of immediate gratification with communication response • Guilt feelings not responding in time • Stress responding to s • Pressure to update/refine online profiles • Anxiety being alone/not connected • Privacy concerns

7 Journalism and techno-stress
Average people voluntarily stress themselves out with technology and social media. We have to do this. Journalists are stressed out enough by deadlines. The ever-changing styles of our field of study is only putting us more at risk.
