Family Networks Web CANS Assessment
Who can complete the CANS Assessment - Lead Agency and Regional Resource Center, STARR Providers Lead agencies use the CANS Assessment to enter the results of a comprehensive assessment of a child or adolescent. The CANS Assessment consists of the CANS Comprehensive Intro, 7 Domains and 7 Modules. (Life Domain Functioning, Child Strengths, Acculturation, Caregiver Strengths, Caregiver Needs, Child Behavioral/Emotional Needs, and Child Risk Behaviors)--7 Modules (Developmental Needs, Medical Needs, Sexuality, Trauma, Substance Abuse, Sexual Aggression, Delinquency, and Fire Setting), and the CANS Comprehensive Summary.

CANS Navigation Staff will be able to filter the list of cases and consumers displayed on the “Cases” tab based on divisions or choose to view all cases and consumers within the organization/site. LAs/RRCs are able to filter cases in Family Networks via these divisions. Select a work “Organization” from the dropdown. Select a “Division”. In the case of a Lead Agency or Regional Resource Center a “Division” will be a staff person name Click the “Search” button to display the list of cases associated to this “Division”. LAs/RRCs now have the ability to access and utilize the Dictation windows from the web application by clicking the “Open Dictation” link.

CANS Navigation Navigation Pane
Select the case name from the Navigation Pane. Click the “Members” tab. Click “Open” to the right of the appropriate case member. The Assessments tab will display previous CANS. Click “Add New” to begin a new CANS.

CANS Introduction Complete the “CANS Comprehensive Introduction” window. Click “Save and Next”. This window must be completed before you can enter the remainder of the CANS.

CANS Domains/Modules Click the “Help” icon for assistance in completing a specific work area (E.g. Life Domain Functioning Goals) The green checkmark in the Navigation Pane indicates a given area has been fully completed. Important Note The red asterisk indicates a mandatory Domain or Module. Please be aware that when completing a CANS mandatory sections change depending on the choices that are made in each completed domain or module. For example, if you rate a child’s “Sexual Development” as a 2 or 3 in the “Life Functioning” domain, you will be required to complete the “Sexuality” module. Select a Domain from the Navigation Pane. Click the dropdown next to each category to select a rating. Use the ? for clarification. Complete “Rationale for Rating” Click “Save and Next” to move to the next Domain/Module to be completed.

CANS Summary Complete the “Safety Plan for Child and Community”.
Complete the “Clinical Formulation and Action Plan Recommendation”. Click “Save and Next”.

CANS Review/Approve Click the printer icon to print the Document.
The Review/Approve window displays the full document so that it can be reviewed prior to sending it for approval, or before printing. The CANS document will display each Domain and Module. If completed it will also display the ratings sorted by most concerning to least. Review the document. Use the “Approvals” button at the bottom right of the window to either send the CANS for approval, or to approve the completed CANS if you are a designated approver.

CANS Review/Approve Add “Comments” if necessary. This field can also be used by other reviewers, such as “Approvers”. These “Comments” would be time-stamped and saved in the “Comment History” field above. Click the “Request” button. You have sent the Treatment Plan for Approval. Important Note If you’re a designated approver wanting to approve the CANS- Follow steps one and two, then click “Approve” on the subsequent window.

CANS Conference You are able to electronically record that a case conference has occurred for this family/child by selecting “Conference” from the Navigation Pane. This function does not send an electronic notification. Complete the “Conference Date”, “Conference Location” and “Conference Time” fields. Enter any necessary “Conference Comments” in the text field. Click “Add Participants” . Use the checkboxes to indicate who was invited to the conference. Click “Select Participants”. Use the checkboxes to indicate which invitees did or did not attend.
