Literary Characterization
Foils - is a character who contrasts with another character —usually the protagonist— to highlight particular qualities of the other character. In some cases, a subplot can be used as a foil to the main plot. Parallel - characters are used for a similar purpose. They tend to share several qualities and are used to complement and highlight each other's traits. Common mirrorcharacters embark on parallel plots, sometimes to achieve a single goal, which tests them and highlights their traits in different ways. A doppelganger (German for “double-goer”) is a term used to describe the idea that each person has a “double” of himself or herself. More importantly, every being has another side to them, usually being the “dark” or “evil” side. Sigmund Freud referred to this dark side as the “id”.
