1 Assessment Information Over St. John’s CE Primary School
Year 6 Over St. John’s CE Primary School .

2 Age Related Expectations
Each year, children are assessed against age related expectations. Age Related Expectations Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 New curriculum gives age expectations. We use bands which relate to each year group With the new curriculum the government decided to take away the levels and sub levels to give schools greater flexibility to decide different assessment procedures. We are now in an era with a new curriculum and no levels. So how will we assess pupils? For each year group there are age related expectations which pupils are assessed against, not levels Pupils will be expected to work through the year group curriculum and by the end of the school year reach age related expectations. We call these expectations BANDS

3 An average Year 1 child would be expected to be working in Band 1
An average Year 1 child would be expected to be working in Band 1. Year 2 = Band 2 etc. Year 3 = Band 3 etc.

4 However … Some children will be working above age related expectations and some below. In the case of children working below age related expectations, their band will not be the same as their year group.

5 B W S At the end of the year
On the end of the school year report, your child will be assessed against these end of year expectations and will get a number related to their band and a letter that shows where they are within the band. Parents will also be informed throughout the year of the progress their child is making. The letter will be either B (beginning) W (within) S (secure) These bands are then further broken down into steps B W S

6 5 b B W S For Example The b shows that they are Beginning the band
The five says they are working in Band 5 This means they are beginning Year 5 expectations B W S

7 4 w B W S For Example The w shows that they are Within the band
The four says they are working in Band 4 This means they are within Year 4 expectations B W S

8 1 s B W S For Example The s shows that they are Secure the band
The one says they are working in Band 1 This means they are secure with the Year 1 expectations B W S

9 End of year 6 SATs Children in Year 6 will be assessed against the National Curriculum using SATS. In 2019, these tests will take place during the week beginning Monday 13th May.

10 The tests Statutory tests will be administered in the following subjects: Reading (60 minutes) Spelling (approximately 15 minutes) Punctuation, Vocabulary and Grammar (45 minutes) Mathematics - Paper 1: Arithmetic (30 minutes) - Paper 2: Reasoning (40 minutes) Paper 3: Reasoning (40 minutes)

11 The tests In addition, some schools will be required to take part in Science testing, consisting of three tests in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Not all schools will take part in this sampling, which takes place on a later date. However there will be no Science sampling in All tests are externally marked. Writing will be ‘Teacher Assessed’ internally, as in recent years based on the work the children produce in class.

12 Reading The Reading Test consists of a single test paper with three unrelated reading texts, which can fiction, non-fiction and/or poetry. Children are given 60 minutes in total, which includes reading the texts and answering the questions. A total of 50 marks are available. Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading. Some questions are multiple choice or selected response, others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation.

13 Reading Questions focus on retrieval of information, explanation of information, vocabulary and inference. Inference is a big part of the Key Stage 2 SATS test. This involves piecing together clues from the text to draw a conclusion. It is like ‘reading between the lines.’

14 Sample question

15 Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
A Spelling test is administered containing 20 words, lasting approximately 15 minutes. A separate test is given on Punctuation, Vocabulary and Grammar This test lasts for 45 minutes and requires short answer questions, including some multiple choice. Marks for these two tests are added together to give a total for Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

16 Sample question

17 Maths Children will sit three tests: Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3. Paper 1 is an ‘Arithmetic’ paper lasting for 30 minutes, covering calculation methods for all operations, including use of fractions, percentages and decimals. Questions gradually increase in difficulty. Papers 2 and 3 cover ‘Problem Solving and Reasoning’, each lasting for 40 minutes. Pupils will still require calculation skills, knowledge and understanding of fractions etc. but will need to answer questions in context and decide what is required to find a solution. Some questions will be multi-step, where then children need to decide what operations to use and the order of them.
