Genetically Modified Crops: A Solution To World Hunger By Gauri,Dayne and Amir
2
What Are Genetically Modified Crops?
Genetically modified crops (GM crops) are crops which have been genetically altered. This means that these crops have genes inserted in them to effect in wanted changes.
3
How Does It Help? Increased resistance to diseases and pests. Eg. Using a gene which kills caterpillars. Improved climate resistance. Eg. rice has been modified in certain countries to be flood resistance. This allows crops to be grown in low fertile land. Increased crop growth output, by decreasing the loss of crops.
4
How Are They Modified? DNA
1.The plasmids are extracted from the bacteria and cut with an enzyme. DNA 2.The chosen DNA is extracted and combined with the plasmid.
5
How Are They Modified? 1. The modified plasmids are reentered in to the bacteria cell. Bacteria Cell The bacteria cell becomes modified and it's clones will have the same genes. When the bacteria invades the plant, it will pass on the same modified genes.
6
Genetically Modified Tomatoes
Scientists have been able to successfully insert a gene into the tomato to increase its keeping state. This means that tomatoes can be kept for a long period of time without going soft.
