At Petersburg, Grant turned to siege tactics as he had in Vicksburg March 1865 two lines of defense stretched for more than 30 miles around Petersburg Union suffered 40,000 casualties CSA lost 28,000

3 LINCOLN’S PLAN TO HEAL NATION
Confederate VP Alexander Stephens met with Lincoln to discuss an end to war Failure because Confederacy could see no future without slavery Congress had just proposed the 13th amendment which would abolish slavery if ratified 13th Amendment ratified December 1865

4 CONFEDERATES SURRENDER
Lee and his troops trapped in the town of Appomattox Court House, VA Lee formally surrendered to Grant on April 9, 1865

April 14, 1865 Lincoln went to Ford’s Theatre to watch Our American Cousin John Wilkes Booth shot him in the back of the head Lincoln died the next morning Plot uncovered to kill Pres, VP, and Sec of State
