Theories Why is communication so important in online learning?
Constructivism: Framework: as I am reviewing the theories, it seems like constructivism includes communication since the"focus is on interacting with others within a social context" p. 11 Vygotsky and Bruner mentioned that the "focus is on learning as a social process, where communication with others play a role". Kolb's experiential learning circle: concrete experience-- reflective observation-- abstract conceptualisation/analysis- active experimentation. Laurillard's conversation framework: claims that educational media can be analysed and used based on terms of the four dimensions in the framework. See slide Diana Laurillard: The Conversational Framework - an approach to Evaluating e-Assessment Patterns in Terms of Learning Theory Salmon's five-stage model: See slide P.27 has the summary of the theory.

Online Collaborative Learning
Constructivist Approach + Development of Internet = Computer-Mediated Communication ( CMC) or OCL (Harasim 2012 in Bates 2014)) With online collaborative learning, the aim is not to replace the teacher, but to use the technology primarily to increase and improve communication between teacher and learners, with a particular approach to the development of learning based on knowledge construction assisted and developed through social discourse. learning/#sthash.nwq8WM6M.dpuf

LESSON: Working Together Digitally The digital world and its tools offer great possibilities to connect and collaborate with others. In this lesson, students (Grades 4-8) will apply prior knowledge and skills to collaborate digitally and model positive attributes of an effective digital citizen. They will discover how to manage and improve their communication skills and learn to make the most of their connections. Combining their creativity, students will work together to design and contribute to a collaborative learning project in an online community using digital tools of their own choosing.
