Guarantee Basic Rights Protect Individual Rights and Freedoms

Prevents the government from quartering soldiers in your house without permission of the owner.

No unreasonable search and seizure. It protects the right of a persons property. In order to search the property of someone, a search warrant is needed.

No Self-incrimination
No Self-incrimination. You can’t be forced to testify against yourself, and if something you are testifying about will incriminate you (make you guilty), you can stop. This is called pleading the 5th.

The right to a Trial by Jury. It is for CRIMINAL cases. Right to a Speedy Trial by an Impartial Jury. Right to be informed of why. Right to have a lawyer represent you in court.

Right to a Trial by Jury in CIVIL cases. The decision of the case cannot be re-examined by another court like in criminal cases. It preserves the use of local juries in civil matters.

No Cruel of Unusual Punishment. If you commit a crime, the punishment for it must be appropriate.

Your freedoms cannot take away the rights and freedoms of others
Your freedoms cannot take away the rights and freedoms of others. If you use your freedoms in a way that hurts others, your freedoms will lose those freedoms.

Preservation of States Rights
Preservation of States Rights. All powers not delegated to the national government of the United States will be reserved for the State governments.
