1. Commonwealth day It is celebrated on the second Monday in March every year. Each year, a theme for Commonwealth Day is chosen. In 2012, the theme is Connecting Cultures. Commonwealth Day is an opportunity to promote understanding on global issues, international co- operation and the work of the Royal Commonwealth Society, which aims to improve the lives of its citizens. History 1898: Creation of the Empire Day in Canada. 1903: The British League of Australia suggested that the Empire Day should be celebrated by each country. 24th of May, 1916: The first recognition by Britain to the Empire Day was given. January 1921: All the organization of the Empire Day was given to the Royal Colonial. April 1949: Birth of the modern Commonwealth because of the meeting of the most important states from the Empire. 1976: The second Monday in March was picked as the Commonwealth Day. 1977: First simultaneous observance across the entire Commonwealth. Since 1994: The Commonwealth Day takes a different theme each year.
