Science - Building Towers
- What IS a tower? - What do we already know about towers?
2
Some famous towers in the World:
Why do we have tall buildings like these? Is there anything that is the same about these buildings?
3
TOWER: A tall narrow building that stands on its own or is part of another building such as a church. Used for: - looking out for danger - sightseeing/ tourism - to take up less space in crowded cities.
4
Towers can attract tourists to come to a city - this is the Stratosphere in Las Vegas. Look how far down the city is! I even went on rides that swing you over the edge of the tower so that you look straight down and it was SCARY!
5
Look at the shadows of these towers. What do they all have in common?
Wide base, skinny up top.

Mini- Experiments: 1. Partner Balance Test - feet together. LIGHTLY push them so that they sway. - feet spread apart. LIGHTLY push them again. - Switch roles. What did you notice? 2. Pull out a pencil. Try to balance it on its eraser end. What things could we do to make it balance better?

BUILD A TOWER - build a tower out of paper and tape. - you can work with a partner. - keep trying different tricks! - it must stand on its own. - HINTS: - use your tape wisely! It might rip the paper if you try to pull it off! - try rolling paper into tubes. - try anchoring the tower to the floor with tape - remember what we have learned about good bases!

NAME Draw a picture of your tower Write about your tower. Here are a few things you should try to answer while writing: What worked well? What didn't work very well? What did you keep changing as you built? What would you change if you were going to re-build this tower?
