As land costs shot up, contractors decided to create more building space on less land. They decided to build upwards.
Businesses would often move to the upper floors, where rent was cheaper and there was plentiful natural light, which saved money on electricity.

In cities there was also exciting new sources of entertainment, These included operas, art museums, sports games, and dance halls.
