3 The Tragedy of Julius Caesar
Act 3…Conclusion

4 Objectives I can determine how figurative language affects the tone of a text. I can infer the motivations of characters’ actions in a text.

5 We need a volunteer to review what we have read in Act 3 to this point.

6 ACTORS! 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Plebians Antony Octavius’s Servant
Cinna the Poet All

7 Review Questions Answer the following questions with your group on ONE sheet of paper with a proper MLA heading. How does Antony’s use of figurative language in lines on page (from “Through this the well-belovèd Brutus stabbed” to “For Brutus, as you know, was Caesar’s angel”) contribute to the tone of his speech? In what way was Brutus’s “the most unkindest cut of all” (line 177)? Who is responsible for Cinna’s death and why? How does Antony’s speech in Act 3.2 impact the behavior of the Plebeians in Act 3.3? (Critical Thinking) Why did the conspirators kill Caesar? To what extent do the Plebeians share the values and goals of the conspirators?

8 Extra Credit… one more time
In Civil Disobedience, Thoreau states, “We love eloquence for its own sake, and not for any truth which it may utter, or any heroism it may inspire” (part 3, par. 18). How does Thoreau’s observation, as well your reading of Brutus and Antony’s speeches in Act of Julius Caesar, develop your understanding of the relationship between eloquence and the citizens of a given society? For those of you who did NOT take advantage (or full advantage) of my offer of completing memory work for extra credit, this is the last opportunity for extra credit that I will offer this nine weeks. By Friday, February 16th, 2018 at 2:30 P.M., complete a structurally sound, grammatically correct response to the prompt to the right that is not fewer than three LEGIBLY HAND-WRITTEN pages long. This will be worth as much as 25 extra points on your overall points score for this nine weeks—determined by the quality of your work. No one may earn more than 25 extra points on your overall points score for this nine weeks. You will earn NO credit for plagiarized work, and plagiarism WILL be reported to administration for violating the GHS Honor Code.
