Reread Hamlet’s soliloquy at the end of Act II. Think about the emotions behind each of the ideas he discusses in his speech. Using the key below, highlight each idea with the appropriate assigned color/term that BEST fits those lines. Note: Some lines could have more than one color. Not all colors have to be used. Next to six of the ideas you highlight, explain why you chose that term to fit those lines. Ask yourself: how does the diction create tone? Be prepared to defend your choice in a class discussion! KEY: Red: Self-Deprecating (i.e. self-loathing, putting yourself down) Orange: Internal Anger (anger at self, i.e. regret) Yellow: External Anger (anger at others or situation) Green: Jealousy Blue: Depression/Sorrow Violet: Conniving Gray: Doubt
