Force & Motion
2
Force Fkick Fgravity A push or pull that one object exerts on another
A force has both size and direction Fkick Fgravity
3
How do we measure Force? We use a Spring Scale to measure force.
The unit of measurement for force is Newtons.
4
What are some common forces?
Gravitational Force (Gravity) Friction Applied force Balanced Force Unbalanced Force
5
Gravitational Force (Gravity)
The force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses. Weight- is a measure of gravitational force on an object.
6
Friction A force that opposes motion at a contact between two surfaces. Air resistance is a type of friction.
7
Applied Force A force applied to an object by a person or another object. Can be balanced or unbalanced.
8
Balanced Forces Forces acting on an object that are opposite in direction and equal in size. No change in position, direction of motion or speed of an object.
9
Unbalanced forces Fnet Opposing forces that are not equal.
Causes change in position, direction of motion and speed of an object. Fnet
10
Think, pair and share… What direction is the box moving? How do you know? What kind of force is this?
11
Net Force The net force is the total amount of force acting on an object.
