1 Mock Exam Review Warm Up 1
Read your mock exam paper, digest my comments, ask any questions and be reflective.

2 Mock Exam Review Objectives
That you all know what mistakes were made and how to improve. Some of you will have attained expert status and will use your knowledge to help others. NOTE – Internet access, Edmodo, success last year. We will slowly go through topics and question types.

3 Warm Up 2 – Read the Qs again
Warm Up 2 – Read the Qs again. What were the key words/phrases from teach question? Write them down. 1. What can you learn from Source A about surgery before the use of anaesthetics? 2. Study Source B. What impression has the artist tried to give of Simpson’s experiment? Explain your answer, using Source B. 3. Study Sources C, D and E. How far do Sources C, D and E suggest that doctors and surgeons accepted the use of anaesthetics in operations? Explain your answer, using Sources C, D and E. 4. Which of Sources F or G is more useful to the historian who is investigating public attitudes to the use of anaesthetics in the late 1840s? Explain your answer, using Sources F and G. 5. Study Sources A, D and H and use your own knowledge. ‘The use of anaesthetics in surgery in the years to 1870 brought more problems than benefits.’ How far do you agree with this statement? Use your own knowledge, Sources A, D and H and any other sources you find helpful to explain your answer.

5 General Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand?
I structured my answers using paragraphs I always started my answers by directly referring to the question I always focussed on the question within my answers I used my time wisely, spending most time on the questions that were worth the most marks I proof read my work to check for silly mistakes that might give the examiner the wrong impression that I’m not very clever.

6 Q1 Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand?
General Check List Q1 Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand? I included two inferences My inferences were not completely obvious I supported each inference with a quote I didn’t just plonk the quote, I put it in a sentence I didn’t write more than I needed to

7 Q2 Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand?
General Check List Q2 Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand? I have written about the impression given of the EXPERIMENT, not the impression given of chloroform I have supported my impression by referring to details in the source I have included slightly more detail than I did for Q1

8 Q3 Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand?
General Check List Q3 Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand? I have compared the content of the sources in relation to the issue of whether doctors and surgeons accepted the use of anaesthetics I have compared the provenance/reliability of the sources in relation to the issue I have made an overall judgement at the end of my answer I have clearly considered the strength of support of each source I have done two main paragraphs and one short one. I have included quotes

9 Q4 Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand?
General Check List Q4 Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand? I have focussed on how useful the sources are for finding out about PUBLIC ATTITUDES I have written about what the sources can/cannot tell us I have written about the possible reliability of the sources I have made clear that I know that an operation to remove a head is impossible I have come to an overall conclusion and selected a key reason why

10 Q5 Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand?
General Check List Q5 Check List – How far up the sliding scale should you stand? I have included almost twice as much detail as I did for Q4 I have included quotes from the sources to support my answer I have explained my quotes, not plonked them I have used my own knowledge I have included two main paragraphs of roughly equal length and a conclusion I have shown both sides of the argument I have included a sprinkling of reliability analysis to assess the strength of the source evidence.
