(Session 10) “Sustainability Policing” and Assignment Guidance

2 Q: How do we “Police” sustainability?
To begin! Q: How do we “Police” sustainability? Who is doing what? Where is this activity taking place? How is the “policing” being done? When is this activity being undertaken And... why is it being done? Some very important aspects to discuss later, but first some guidance for your assignment

3 Consider: Your BU6019 assignment one!
Submission, electronically, before 12pm noon on the submission date APA Referencing/text books/journals/articles/websites, etc One industry sector to be chosen! Real life examples to be used Refer to topics, concepts and tools discussed in our sessions Critically evaluate the above “Apply” tools discussed to your chosen sector/ real life examples (rather than just discuss what the tools are!)

4 Your Structure! You should use the following structure please, which is suitable for a formal report in any workplace!: Title Page (Names/module/date etc) Contents Page 1.0 Terms of Reference (i.e. Introductory section such as “The Purpose of this report is to …) 2.0 Procedure (What steps you have taken to collect your information – in brief) 3.0 Findings (What have you found out, as a result of your procedure? Sub-headings may be used e.g. 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and so on) 4.0 Conclusions (never any new information in this section) 5.0 Recommendations (e.g. It is recommended that …) 6.0 Appendices 7.0 References

5 Assessment Criteria! 1. Critically examine the theoretical basis of sustainability and its relevance to entrepreneurship 2. Use of real life examples to illustrate key points 3. Identification and discussion of the role of sustainability practices within One chosen sector 4. Application of appropriate theories, concepts and techniques 5. Evidence of wider reading 6. Structure, organisation and presentation of the report

6 A Starting Point! Look over all slides, Handouts, and written notes taken during sessions and the photocopied “articles” I have given out during sessions – These will all help! (e.g ideas/web links/laws/organisations, etc) Then, conduct your own research/wider reading to create argument and discussion - and to provide evidence of wider reading! Also, look at the written notes you took from the talks from our two guest speakers! These points could be extremely useful!

Strategic Planning (3 steps) SMART objectives PESTLE, SWOT analyses – and the importance of resulting Action Plans! 11 Organisations may wish to link to sustainability in order to:
Achieve competitive advantage Enhance their reputation Reduce costs Obtain positive stakeholder views Become environmentally friendly (“Green”)

12 What part does your chosen sector play with regard to:
Extinction of species Climate change (if you believe in this!) Pollution Inequality Poverty And …protecting future generations! Remember that you can develop an argument within your discussion! (For example, what GOOD things/BENEFITS does it also provide?)

Appropriate legislation (e.g. Environmental Protection Acts/ROHS, etc) The Nature Conservancy SIGs Environmental Management for Sustainable Development (EMSD) - journals United Nations The Environment Agency
