1 Telecommunication Evolution
Joint African and ITU SNO Conference Zanzibar, Tanzania 22nd – 26th September 2014 Presented by: Francis Dlamini (General Manager Swazi Telecom, SPTC) 23rd September 2014

2 Presentation outline Telecommunications Layers The OSI model layers
Drivers of Evolution Advent of M2M communications Significance of NOC, SOC, CEM Key Issues and Challenges

3 Telecoms Layers Devices layer Last yard/mile layer Access Layer
Transport Layer Session Control Layer Services Layer Network Management Layer Management Information Layer

4 The OSI reference model
All network elements operate in the layers above Need for all technical staff to master OSI

5 Drivers of Evolution Bandwidth hungry OTT services
Decrease in smart devices market prices, thus increased adoption by market Adoption of Machine-to-Machine communications Invent of the connected/smart home and office New innovations by system integrators and researchers Drive to reduce OPEX and increase revenues by telcos Drive to align services with the consumer industry needs

6 Advent of M2M communications

7 Advent of M2M communications
M2M is about communication between devices, objects, things Bandwidth usage by M2M systems is always 100% any the time of the day Techno-economic forecasts indicate that in the coming years M2M communication will become massive, connecting tens of billions devices All industries are waiting for such M2M systems to realize smart operations M2M communications is the common language for all devices to communicate

8 Significance of NOCs

9 Significance of NOCs The NOC centres are a key tool for the
operator to manage service and customer experience To avoid counting the wrong sheep and to avoid sleepless nights for operators’ management Drastically reduce OPEX, thus increase in revenues To better manage threats and opportunities by OTT players To keep consumer experience, and knowledge base Keep fault management and resolution experience

10 Key Issues for Network Operators
Description Action Backward compatibility with existing systems and services Take an inventory of existing network technologies from operators (regional) before developing new technologies Interworking between the old and new technologies to complement each other There must be a standard to ensure service migration from the old technology to the new technology How do we synchronize technology rollout among operators taking into account inter-operator connectivity issues Operators to discuss with each other to achieve good inter-operator connectivity to better service in the local market and customers Operator and vendor sign-off of product roadmaps based on operators strategic plan and technology roadmap Ensure that the Operator has a clear evolution plan to match market and business development Consider the involvement of operators in the development of new products Vendors should share the latest technology and product road map by quarterly with each operator Multi-vendor integration Vendors should have good inter-operation designed solutions to guarantee the integration Network simulation and verification before implementation The operator and vendor should have good network planning before deploying the network to guarantee the performance of the network
