1 Allusion Warm-up Directions: Copy the passage below. Note the allusion and how it is used. SoW: what kind of sentence is this? Lauren shed crocodile tears for her classmate Rachel, though she secretly celebrated Rachel’s failed test.

2 Warm-up Answer Crocodiles were once thought to shed large tears before devouring their prey. This belief, which dates to ancient times, comes from the fact that crocodiles have ducts in the corner of their eyes which release “tears” when the crocodile opens its jaws wide. Obviously, this reptile has no real feelings of sympathy for its prey since it has little more than an amygdala and a brain stem (compassion derives from frontal cortex). Today, to shed crocodile tears means to show false sympathy for someone. Now, make up a sentence of your own using this allusion, matching its sentence structure!!
