Ions -An ion is an atom that has either more electrons or less electrons beyond a neutral atom -There are patterns for which elements will typically give off electrons or gain electrons
2
Ions Notice that group 8A will never give up or take electrons; they always remain neutral Ions will either give up electrons or take electrons in order to maintain a “full” valence shell of 8 electrons
3
Ions -To understand how ions are formed:
-if an atom loses electrons, it will be positive by the amount of e- lost -if an atom gains electrons, it will be negative by the amount of e- gained -Examples of ions: monatomic ions: Na+ Mg2+ Al3+ N3- O2- F- polyatomic ions: NO3- SO42- CO OH- NH4+

Identifying Monatomic Ions
1. Write down the name of one element that has a 1+ charge. How many electrons has it gained or lost? 2. Write down the name of one element that has a 3- charge. How many electrons has it gained or lost? 3. Write down the name of one element that has a 1- charge. How many electrons has it gained or lost? 4. Write down the name of one element that will always have a 0 charge. How many electrons does it gain or lose? 5. Write down the name of one element that has a 2+ charge. How many electrons has it gained or lost?
