2 Transverse Waves A transverse wave is one in which the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of travel. Notice, in the image below, the wave is moving left-to-right but it is oscillating in the up-and-down direction.

5 Longitudinal (compression) Waves
Longitudinal waves produce oscillations parallel to the direction of travel. (longitudinal waves are also called compression waves)

6 Another Example of a Longitudinal Wave
The wave in the image below has oscillations parallel to the direction of travel. The wave is moving left-to-right. The wave is also compressing and relaxing left-to-right
