1 Unit 2: Ecology Lesson #3: Sampling Techniques
Objective: Explain how ecologists use mark and recapture to estimate population size. Please take out your composition notebook “No Bags About It”

2 DUE NOW… Please turn to page

3 Sampling Techniques Notes Ecologists study relationships

4 Ecological research methods include observation, and experimentation.
Observation is the act of carefully watching something over time.

5 Experiments Lab Experiments: more control, but are not reflective of the complex interactions in nature. Field experiments: more accurate, but cannot be manipulated to test certain variables.

6 Sampling Techniques Mark-and-Recapture Used to estimate the size of a population. Capturing individuals, tag, release. Can be captured again.

7 Quadrat Sampling: Place a quadrat in an area Count the population several areas, then calculate the total population.

8 Video Questions Why/how are quadrats useful?
What are the different types of quadrats used for sampling? How are quadrats placed in an area?

9

10 In your notebook Pg 400 answer questions 2 and 3
Pg. 401 read “Quadrats and Population Size” Answer questions 1 and 2 in your notebook. Show all work
