Conflict in the Northwest Territory
1786 several American Indian Tribes became concerned that settlers were taking their land They joined together to form a confederation Agreed to stop selling the land to the United States They also asked for a new treaty, but settlers continued to arrive Using guns supplied by the British, Little Turtle and other Indians defeated some U.S. troops in 1790 1791, after more defeating more U.S. troops, President Washington appointed Gen. Anthony Wayne (mad Anthony) to defeat Little Turtle He did so at the Battle of Fallen Timbers (he also burned Indians villages and fields) Realizing they couldn’t defeat the U.S. soldiers, the confederation signed the Treaty of Greenville in 1795, this gave the U.S. access to Indian lands in the Northwest Territory

The Whiskey Rebellion The federal government faced more problems when it passed a tax on whiskey and other alcohol in Farmers became angry because they could not afford to pay the tax 1794 some farmer joined together and violently resisted the tax collectors – Whiskey Rebellion President Washington assembled 10,000 soldiers and sent them in Pennsylvania. Most of the rebels fled into the countryside. NO BATTLE WAS FOUGHT- how is this a change from the past history???

Washington’s Farewell Address
1796 Washington decided not to run for a third term (another precedent). In his farewell address, he advised the nation on several topics (political parties, foreign policy, and the economy) Economy – advised the government to avoid borrowing money Foreign alliances – advised against making permanent alliances (could remain free of foreign influences) Political parties – warned the nation to solve its internal problems so it could be independent from t the rest of the world.
