Lessons from GEOSTAT 1A Improving disaggregation of data is a huge challenge (Very) different viewpoints from top-down countries and bottom-up countries IT developments should be managed at a central level Possibly overrating of connection between statistics and geography Business interests of NSI can be in the way of the project results 10-March 2011 GISCO Working Group Meeting 2011

GEOSTAT 1B – key figures Initially planned for 2010, postponed to 2011 for Eurostat internal reasons Funding by Eurostat EUR Minimum co-financing 10% Planned launch of the call in May 2011 Expected signature in October 2011 Duration 24 months 10-March 2011 GISCO Working Group Meeting 2011

GEOSTAT 1B goals GEOSTAT 1B: from theory into practice, getting ready for the census data Testing and improving methods with a clear focus on data disaggregation and data integration Data from a diversity of countries, projects, and national grid initiatives Gaining experience with census-type data Co-operation with the disaggregation research community Data access to data from bottom-up countries Keeping the community active and informed 27-28 Jan 2011 GEOSTAT progress meeting in Helsinki

Content of the GEOSTAT 1B call for proposals
Work package 1 Geostatistics Apply the methods developed in GEOSTAT 1A and create a set of sample maps (minimum: sex, age groups) Evaluate further auxiliary datasets for improved disaggregation Quality assessment of the disaggregation, integration of datasets from different sources, the impact of confidentiality control Work package 2 Case studies Work package 3 Project website Maintain the website, create content Work package 4 Exploitation - distribution - dissemination Liaise with statistical offices, share the expertise e.g. by organising a grid mapping workshop at the next GEOSTAT conference Continued effort for a harmonised and low barrier data access policy 10-March 2011 GISCO Working Group Meeting 2011
