1 Solomon Islands 2 April Tsunami
However in the pacific for example for some time there has been a growing demand for small area statistics below the Enumeration Area level. A prime example is the need for village level population and housing data required for assessing, monitoring and managing disaster preparedness, given the Pacific islands' annual exposure to cyclones, as well as the very imminent threat of sea level rise to low-lying coral atoll countries. More recently an earthquake measuring 8.1 struck the Solomon Islands on 2 April creating a tsunami causing significant damage in the Solomon Islands. Information on displaced village population was needed in targeting emergency response work. Here's what Gizo Town looked like after a massive earthquake of 8.0 magnitude struck the Solomons on April 2, 2007, just south of Gizo, 350km NW of Honiara. The tsunami set off by the quake caused widespread damage in the area At least 34 were killed and several dozen missing. 5,500 people are thought to have been displaced in total. The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) estimates that up to 50,000 people may be affected out of a total population of 100,000 in Western and Choiseul provinces
