Student PPT: Meiosis vs. Mitosis
2
Terminology A chromosome is a long thread-like structure of DNA containing the genetic material of the cell. Haploid is also written as n A haploid cell has ONE set of chromosomes Diploid is also written as 2n A diploid cell has TWO sets of chromosomes
3
Directions Use this PowerPoint presentation to complete the guided notes section for Activity 1.
4
Fact 1: Before BOTH mitosis and meiosis start, the chromosomes are duplicated.
As you can see in this diagram, a single chromosome strand is duplicated into TWO chromosomes strands. Fact 2: Now, each chromosome strand in the newly duplicated chromosome set is called a sister chromatid. These sister chromatids are connected by a centromere.
5
Fact 3: Mitosis results in 2 diploid daughter cells. Each daughter cell is identical to parent. Meiosis results in 4 haploid daughter cells. Each daughter cells is genetically different from each other.
6
Video Directions: Watch the video illustrating the difference between meiosis and mitosis. After you and your partner finish the video, answering the following questions on your guided notes. How many chromosomes do the daughter cells produced in meiosis have compared to those of mitosis? Are the daughter cells produced in meiosis identical? Explain why or why not. In your own words or drawing, describe the difference between mitosis and meiosis? Is there an advantage to an organism undergoing mitosis? Meiosis?
7
Summing it up Both meiosis and mitosis result in the separation of existing cells into new ones. However, they differ in “how” this is accomplished and the “products” made. Two main differences: Meiosis involves two cell divisions Meiosis results in 4 HAPLOID cells that are NOT identical to the parent cells
