1 L1 – Heat and Temperature
P1: Energy for the home L1 – Heat and Temperature KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

2 Connector True or False? Correct the false statements
Heat and Temperature are the same thing. Heat energy flows from somewhere hot to somewhere colder Heat energy is measured in degrees celsius. Hotter objects cool quicker than colder objects regardless of environment. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

3 L01. Making Crude Oil Useful
Lesson Outcomes APP AF1,AF3,AF4 HSW 2b,2c,3a How I did Targets Task 1: To be able to explain the difference between heat and temperature Grade C Task 2: To be able to explain how energy flows from one object to another Grade B Task 3: To be able to explain the difference between heat and temperature in terms of particle movement Grade A/A*

4 New Information for Task 1
Have a look at this cup of tea. What is happening to the cup of tea? Is it gaining energy? Is it losing energy? Where is the energy going? Why does it go that way? Can hand out cups of tea or boiling water in beakers to students. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

5 Homework Homework task: Complete the write up for the Experiment. Display results in an appropriate graph. Analyse your results in detail. What do you notice? Can you explain your results in terms of science? Due date: Criteria for Grade C: Criteria for Grade B: Criteria for Grade A/A*:

6 BIG picture What skills will you be developing this lesson?
Numeracy Literacy Team work Self management Creative thinking Independent enquiry Participation Reflection How is this lesson relevant to every day life? (WRL/CIT)

7 Keywords: Can you explain these key words? Heat, Thermal Energy, Thermometer, Joules, Degree Celsius, Temperature, Energy, Thermogram.

8 What is the difference between heat and temperature?
Discuss with the person next to you. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

9 What is Heat? Click here Heat is a form of energy called Thermal Energy. It is measured in Joules. Heat energy always flows from warmer regions to cooler regions. HOT COLD KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

10 What is Heat? Heat is a form of ______ called _______ Energy.
Heat energy always flows from ________ regions to ________ regions. HOT COLD KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

11 Difference between heat and temperature?
What is Temperature? Temperature is a measure of how quickly molecules in an object are vibrating. It can be measured in ____ or _____ or _____. Watch brain pop clip to highlight the difference. Brainpop clip here. Pupils make notes on difference between heat and temperature. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram. 11

12 Task 1 (Grade C) Task 1: If you put an ice cube out in the open it melts Can you explain why? Task 1: Extension Keywords for Task 1: Thermal Energy Temperature Surroundings Equilibrium

13 How can I improve on task 1?
Task 1: Review Go back to your lesson outcome grid and fill out the ‘How I did’ and the ‘Targets’ column. Lesson Outcomes How I did Targets Task 1: To be able to explain the difference between heat and temperature Grade C Met? Partly met? Not met? How can I improve on task 1?

14 New Information for Task 2

15 Investigating Cooling
The amount of help given for this depends on the ability of your group:- Depending on time and group ability either allow students to plan their own investigation (to be carried out next lesson) or get students to plot a simple cooling curve What are the factors which effect how fast my cup of coffee cools? Identify and select the variables that you wish to measure and control Produce your own experimental procedure, including the selection of appropriate time intervals. All students should have experience of plotting a cooling curve for some hot water. . KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

16 Task 2 (Grade B) Task 2: Carry out the experiment and plot a cooling curve. Analyse and Evaluate your data. Keywords for Task 2:

17 Draw a graph Plot a graph of Temperature against time.
KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

18 Conclusion What did you observe? Keep it simple
Describe the graph – what happens to the gradient. What happens to the heat energy in the water? When is more heat energy moving? Plan your own experiment What variables could you change? KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

19 Evaluation Identify 2 results that look slightly wrong..
Why would they be wrong? How could you fix them for the future? If you had unlimited resources how could you improve your results? KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

20 How can I improve on task 2?
Task 2: Review Go back to your lesson outcome grid and fill out the ‘How I did’ and the ‘Targets’ column. Lesson Outcomes How I did Targets Task 2: To be able to explain how energy flows from one object to another Grade B Met? Partly met? Not met? How can I improve on task 2?

21 New Information for Task 3

22 Cooling Demonstration
Several demonstrations can be carried out here using data loggers. Demonstrations should be chosen to highlight some factors which students did not investigate or did not get good accurate results. Plot a cooling curve for different amounts of water. Ask students how mass of water effects cooling rate. Plot a cooling curve for polystyrene cup and a ceramic cup or two polystyrene cup one with lid and one without lid. KEY WORDS: heat, thermometer, joules, degree Celsius, temperature, energy, thermogram.

23 How can I improve on task 3?
Task 3: Review Go back to your lesson outcome grid and fill out the ‘How I did’ and the ‘Targets’ column. Lesson Outcomes How I did Targets Task 3: To be able to explain the difference between heat and temperature in terms of particle movement Grade A/A* Met? Partly met? Not met? How can I improve on task 3?

24 Discussion from last slide can be carried out as plenary.
Review of lesson Discussion from last slide can be carried out as plenary. Have a look at the cooling curve for a cup of coffee.
