Literary Analysis Stream of Consciousness- is the literary device where the writer tries to capture the natural flow of the thought. In The Jilting of Granny Weatherall this device allows readers to have access to Granny’s thoughts including dreams and memories as if we are eighty years old.
3
Literary Analysis Along with stream of consciousness many details are used to create flashbacks or memories in the story. Flashback- is an interruption in a narrative that describes an event from the past. An example of a flashback from the story is when Granny notices how untidy Cornelia’s room is and that detail leads to Granny’s flashback to when she would clean rooms.

Motifs Jilting Control Wasteful
Granny is jilted by George on her wedding day, by Hapsy when Granny calls to her and she never comes, and by God for not giving her a sign. Control Granny needs to be in control, but she has no control over her death or at this moment her life. Wasteful Granny doesn’t like to be wasteful she thinks that you can use anything again or that someone needs it “pick all the fruit this year and see that nothing is wasted. There’s always someone who can use it.”

Symbols and Themes Betrayal
George Betrayed Granny by leaving her at the alter. When John died at a young age Granny felt betrayed because he left her to take care of the kids on her own. Cleanliness/dust The uncleanliness of Cornelia’s house reminds Granny of the box of letters from George that Granny needs to tend to. The dust Granny worries about is like Granny’s life and all the memories she has tried to sweep away.
