Narratives Fractured Fairy Tales Contract
2
Structure of a narrative
Orientation – example Complication – example Resolution – example Coda/Moral - example
3
Orientation This stage ‘alerts’ the listener and/or reader to what is to follow, usually by introducing the main character/s in a setting of time and place
4
Complication In this stage a sequence of events, which may begin in a usual pattern, is disrupted or changed in some way so that the pattern of events becomes a problem for one or more of the characters. The events are evaluated by the character/s, thus making it clear to the reader/listener that a crisis has developed.
5
Resolution The problems of the complication are resolved or attempted to be resolved in the resolution. A pattern of normalcy is restored to the events, but the main character/s has changed as a consequence of the experience. There can be minor resolutions that are then followed by another complication then followed by the final resolution.
6
Coda/Moral This stage makes it explicit on how the character/s has changed and what has been learned from the experience. It also gives the reader a moral to be learnt from the narrative.

Dreaming Stories He flew down to the ground to catch a big juicy grub but instead landed right on a sharp stick. It pierced his little foot and made him very sick. For days he lay on the ground in pain. His foot swelled up. He was dying. All his mates gathered around to see how they could help. All except the crow. He just wandered around with his hands behind his back. In the Dreamtime all the birds were black - all one colour. Till one day this little dove was flying around looking for food. Crow got no colour at all! So that's how the birds got their colours. And as for the dove, he soon got better, thanked the parrot and was able to fly away. Suddenly the parrot rushed forward - and with her sharp beak BURST the little dove's swollen foot. Colour splashed out all over the parrot. Red and green and blue ran down her chest, wings and tail. It splashed out all over the other birds. Some got red, some brown, some blue, some yellow. Some got spots. All got colours. All except the crow who was standing away from the others.
