What is Chemistry? Ch. 1
2
Chemistry The study of _________ (anything that has _______ and occupies _____) and how it ________.
3
Scientific Method 1. Problem/Purpose
State the ___________ to be answered 2. Research Gather background information 3. Hypothesis Predict a _____________________. 4. Experiment Perform a test (s) to prove or disprove ___________. 5. Data Collection Collect _________ and ___________ from the experiment 6. Conclusion/Theory An ___________ or _________ to the problem
4
Different terms to describe scientific ideas
__________ - an explanation of the phenomenon based on many experimental evidence - flexible enough to be modified if new data/proof introduced Ex. Atomic Theory ___________ - description of the observed phenomenon; doesn’t explain why or what causes it. -stands the test of time, often without change - experimentally proven over and over - has uniformity and is universal Ex. Law of gravity
5
Designing Experiments
Experiments require two groups: control and experimental group so you can compare the results. 1) __________group the standard of comparison group; all conditions are groups kept the same 2) ______________ group - the test group; all conditions are kept the same EXCEPT the condition being tested (_____ variable)
6
Experimental Design Example: How does vitamin water affect plant growth? Control group = ___________________ Experimental group = _______________ _________________________ Constants = amount of water, same type of plant, same amount of light, soil, temperature, same type of pot
7
Two types of variables 1) Independent variable = a change of
condition; ________ (i.e. an increase in concentration); usually on a _________of a graph 2) Dependent variable = a change of second condition caused by the independent variable; __________ _________ (i.e. rate or speed of chemical reaction); usually on a _______ of a graph
8
Experimental Design Example: How does vitamin water affect plant growth? Independent variable = ____________ (a change you make) Dependant variable = ______________ (in cm), _____________ (a measurable result showing whether independent variable causes any change or not.)
9
