Procedures, Procedures, Procedures!
Your notebooks should be organized in this course with the tabbed dividers reading, “Warm-Ups”, “Unit 1”, “Unit 2”, “Unit 3”, “Unit 4”, “Unit 5”, and “Unit 6” Every assignment will have your name, date, unit, and week on it While this will not be checked, there may be open book quizzes or tests occasionally that will benefit those who have their binder organized. For warm-ups, you will take out a new sheet of paper every week, label your name, date, unit and week on it and divide the paper into 5 sections for each day of the week

Unit 1 Opener Shut your eyes and imagine what I am saying:
“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Ernest Hemingway Raise your hand and tell me: What did you see in your head? How did these words make you feel? Where type of writing is this? Where would one see these words? What is the plot? Who are the characters? What do you think is the setting?
9
Unit 1 Opener For the next few weeks, we will be studying story telling and how stories are told by looking at newspaper articles, short stories, poems, and comics. You will create your own comic by the end of this unit. Do not worry if you are not an artist!!
10
Liberty Script – Before you work together
What genre do you think this is? (movie, play, book, poem, newspaper article, etc.) What's going on in this script? Who are the people in this script? What emotions do you think they are feeling? Choose one person in the script. What do you think he or she is thinking at this moment?
11
Storytelling with your body: SNAPSHOT!
12
In pairs…. Look at the script I handed you. Two of you will create a snapshot picture of the actions, expressions, and dialogue. I will call on a few people to show their snapshot of the situation. Things to think about: What are their emotions? Are they happy, sad, etc. Show this in your snapshot through facial expressions and gestures and poses What are they talking about? Show this in your snapshot through facial expressions and gestures and poses Who in your pair is Papi and who is Mami? Take 5-7 minutes to plan your snapshot.
13
Tableu Discussion Questions
* What do we know about the relationship between the two characters? * How did you decide on your tableau? * What else do we need to know to understand what is going on between these two characters
14
Quotation Mark Rules – on a piece of paper
* Only use quotation marks around direct speech. * If a direct quotation is interrupted mid-sentence, do not capitalize the second part of the quotation. o "I didn't see an actual alien being," Mr. Johnson said, "but I sure wish I had." * Indent each time the speaker changes * Periods and commas always go inside of the quotation mark o She said, "Hurry up." o She said, "He said, 'Hurry up.'"
15
Quotation Mark Rules – on a piece of paper
* Question marks and exclamation marks should only go inside the quotation mark if the direct speech is a question or exclamation. Otherwise, place it on the outside. o She asked, "Will you still be my friend?" o Do you agree with the saying, "All's fair in love and war"? (Here the question is outside the quote)
16

18
Mami: Trouble. Papi: We will call him Liberty. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Eh, Liberty, you are a lucky sign!

Questions – Write these on the same sheet of paper
What type of speaker tags did you use? Why? Did you vary your punctuation marks? If so, what hints in the text did you use to make your choices? What type of conversation do you think this is? Why? Did you vary your sentence structure? If so, how?
