11 A matter of choice Alice Bain, a 36-year-old woman from Seattle, is typical of many people these days. She is happily married, enjoys her job, has lots of friends, and spends the weekends doing exactly what she wants. She has it all. The only thing she doesn’t have is children – and she doesn’t want any. Family members ask when, not if, she is going to have a baby. But Alice isn’t thinking about motherhood. “Kids are fine,” she says. “It’s just that taking care of another human being is not what I want to be doing with my life for the next 20 years.”
