2. Mennonites on the Great Trek 1945

3. Mennonite refugees arriving in Canada after World War Two faced a number of new problems for Mennonites. 1) Setting up traditional farming communities, isolated from neighbors was not possible. 2) They often had limited knowledge of faith and their Mennonite heritage.

4. Mennonites moved to cities and found new jobs and employment than they traditionally had done. They intermingled with their neighbors and struggled with how to keep their faith in a pluralistic multi cultural grouping. Schleitheim, in the world but not of the world became a serious challenge. Urban village: an answer? Mennonite Schools?

5. Post war city churches set up Sunday Schools and adult classes to educate and instruct members on what Mennonites believe. Cultural institutions closely related to the church were set up to try and preserve their lifestyle in the midst of a city of other cultures. e.g. German school. Children’s Choirs, Westgate, MBCI, WMES

6. Schleitheim was calling for a church that would be pure, disciplined and dedicated. Are Mennonites achieving this? Is the urban, rural split in values a reflection of this attempt?
