Presented by: Kristin Magee, M.Ed. 26 Year Elementary School Teacher

2 Learning Target: How do I create a growth mindset within my students?

3 Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D. was interested in understanding how people coped with failures. She decided to study this by watching children grapple with problems. She brought children one at a time into a room and had them solve a series of problems. As children came to the more difficult ones, she watched how they coped and strategized to solve them. Dr. Dweck asked the children what they were thinking and feeling to gather data. Early years This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA

4 Survey-do you have a growth mindset or fixed mindset?
Take 3 minutes to answer the following statements about your mindset. Then we will discuss the findings with the group. Survey-do you have a growth mindset or fixed mindset?

5 Answers to Survey Questions 1, 2, 5, & 7 reflect fixed-mindset.
Questions 3, 4, 6, & 8 reflect growth-mindset. The first 4 questions addressed intelligence, but you could also exchange the word intelligence to other abilities. The last 4 questions were about your personal qualities. Did your personality mindset differ from your “intelligence mindset”? Intelligence mindset comes into play with situations that involve mental ability. Your “personality mindset” comes into play in situations that involve your personality, such as how dependable, cooperative, caring, etc. you are. The growth mindset in personal situations makes you concerned with improving. The fixed mindset in personal situations makes you concerned about how you will be judged. Answers to Survey

6 Mindsets: Growth or fixed
Fixed Mindset: A fixed ability that needs to be proven. One is born with their intelligence and it is not changeable. Growth Mindset: A changeable ability that can be developed through learning. “You have a choice. Mindsets are just beliefs. They’re powerful beliefs, but they’re just something in your mind, and you can change your mind.” Carol Dweck Mindsets: Growth or fixed

Think of these questions when brainstorming: 1) What are some engaging activities that students can complete that will help them grow their learning in a positive way? 2) Which activity do you think would be the best way to create a growth mindset in the ones you brainstormed? Circle it on your chart. 3) Why do you think so? Table talk-How do I initiate a growth mindset in students?
