2 Other Methods – Groundwater Monitoring
Tank Leak Detection Other Methods – Groundwater Monitoring GROUNDWATER MONITORING Groundwater must be within 20 feet of the surface Monitoring wells are used to sense the presence of liquid product floating on the surface Another Method of Release Detection allowed for tanks is Groundwater Monitoring. This is one of the least preferred methods in that groundwater monitoring devices are used to sense the presence of liquid product floating on the groundwater. If you have product floating on the groundwater, you already have a problem. This method requires installation of monitoring wells, such as the one shown above, at strategic locations in the ground near the tank and along the piping runs. To discover if leaked product has reached groundwater, these wells can be checked periodically – at least monthly, by mechanical means or continuously with permanently installed equipment. This method is effective only at sites where groundwater is within 20 feet of the surface. 2

3 Other Methods – Soil Vapor Monitoring
Tank Leak Detection Other Methods – Soil Vapor Monitoring SOIL VAPOR MONITORING The last method of Release Detection allowed on our list is Vapor Monitoring also called soil-vapor monitoring, and this is probably the least preferred method. Vapor monitors sense and measure product vapor in the soil around the tank and piping to determine the presence of a leak. This method requires installation of carefully placed monitoring wells. Vapor monitoring can be performed periodically using manual devices or continuously using permanently installed equipment. Because background levels of vapors or often present, this is not considered to be a very accurate method. 3
