Separatists AKA Pilgrims
Led by William Bradford Wanted to “separate” themselves from The Church of England Fled to Holland to avoid persecution in England Things got bad there, so they decided to go to the New World Secured a charter from the Virginia Company and permission from King James to establish a colony near Jamestown Speedwell sprung a leak so everyone had to pile onto the Mayflower Storms at sea set them off course so they landed in modern day Cape Cod many miles north of Chesapeake Bay. Colony established in 1620

Puritans Led by John Winthrop
Wanted to remain in The Church of England but “purify” the stuff they felt was wrong with it. 1630 about 900 settlers from the Plymouth Colony followed John Winthrop to Boston/Salem to establish a new settlement. King Charles I granted the charter for the colony The Great Migration from England ( ) brings tens of thousands people seeking religious freedom to the new colony.

Mayflower Compact Colonists pledged to obey “just and equal laws” created for the “general good of the colony” An agreement that provided for a government and set of laws This is a precursor to representational government and the idea of having input into the creation of laws that directly impact the population or community
