To make traditional cap of people of Split according to authentic examples. To develop fine motor skills. Activities: A visit to the Ethnographic Museum Studying the literature about the traditional costume and dance of Split The study of family heritage (old pictures, tailoring patterns) Tailoring and sewing (mechanical and manual) Correlation - Mathematics Participants: Members of school pupils' cooperative Parents Teacher
3
History The term traditional costume of the city of Split refers to the clothing common people in Split used to wear, mentioned since the 19th century. Traditional costume was made of homemade cloth as everyday clothes. The emphasis is on the festive variant, which in some elements has been preserved the longest.
4
By the end of the 19th century men's traditional costume
was determined by these parts: Shirt – a white linen shirt with coils Crozet – a sleeveless vest Trousers – long black trousers Belt – a silk Levantine red belt Tunic – a tunic with long sleeves Coat – a coat with sleeves and hood Socks Shoes Cap – a flat red cap
5
Traditional cap It is flat and round, made of red cloth. The brim is about 7,5 cm tall. It is encrusted with two rows of red silk braid or ribbon. There is a circle made of black ribbon on the brim, attached with black thread and a tuft under it. The cap is lined with white cloth.
6
A visit to the Ethnographic Museum
At the Ethnographic Museum, the pupils have seen the oldest preserved examples of traditional caps. They also studied the written records about tailoring and sewing of traditional cap of people of Split.
7
The pupils learned that the caps were made in red or black.
Red caps were worn on special occasions (feast of St. Domnius, Sunday Mass, etc.) Black caps were worn in mourning.
8
Calculating dimensions of the cap Correlation: Mathematics
The cap is cylindrical The base of the cylinder is a circle of radius r The cap has a diameter 2r = 17 cm
9
Mantle of the cylinder becomes a rectangle when unfolded
It is the brim of the cap One side of the rectangle is the height of the cylinder h and the other is the circumference of the circle 2·r·π The dimensions of the brim are 53x7.5 cm
10
and the other half for the brim of the cap.
The material used for making the cap is called „ČOJA” (Cloth) A piece of cloth has dimensions of 160x220 cm Pupils have calculated that they can make 45 caps (90:17 is approximately 5, and 160:17 is approximately 9) They have spent about half of the material for making the top part (circle) and the other half for the brim of the cap.
11
They have calculated that about 5% of the material would go to waste.
Each cap is encrusted with two rows of ribbon. Pupils calculated that they need 0.53x2x45=47.7m of ribbon, which is approximately 48m. To make the rosette they need 60 cm of ribbon for each cap. Thus they need 0.6x45=27 m of ribbon for the rosettes. In total they need = 75 m of ribbon for all caps. They have calculated that about 5% of the material would go to waste.

The use of traditional costume
The traditional costume of people of Split is mainly worn in festive occasions and during the performance of traditional dances of Split. Our pupils dressed in traditional costume dance „monfrina” at the school play.
22
It consists of three dances: monfrina, quadrille and saltine polka.
The choreography of traditional dances of Split has been performed for six decades in unchanged form. It consists of three dances: monfrina, quadrille and saltine polka. The traditional dances of Split are characterized by the dignity, the elegance of movement, the refined posture and softness of steps that reflect the influence of the Western part of the Mediterranean, all interlaced with a typical Mediterranean „easygoing„ attitude. The beautiful traditional costumes are very elaborate.
23
CONCLUSION While working on this project, we realized the enormous importance of the legacy of our ancestors and the vast richness of our history. Traditional costume of people of Split is a real treasure that we must preserve for future generations.
