3 Reflection for Project 1
This requires a short paragraph explaining your writing process for project 1 and the decisions you made as the writer in terms of topic, purpose, audience, writing moves, etc. Also, it will discuss your strengths and weaknesses as a writer, as well as goals you have set for yourself moving into project 2. This will be submitted to Eli and is Due: Sunday, Sept. 24 by 11 pm.

4 Defining Artifact noun
1. any object made by human beings, especially with a view to subsequent use. 2. a handmade object, as a tool, or the remains of one, as a shard of pottery, characteristic of an earlier time or cultural stage, especially such an object found at an archaeological excavation. 3. any mass-produced, usually inexpensive object reflecting contemporary society or popular culture:artifacts of the pop rock generation.

Popular Culture is the arts, artifacts, entertainment, fads, beliefs and values that are shared by large segments of society. Think in terms of: Fads    Trends    Icons

We also need to consider: Media's role in defining and perpetuating trends and influences in popular culture. Ex. Sports Ex. Popular Christmas Toys Racial and ethnic beliefs and attitudes in popular culture. Ex. Rap Music Ex. 9/11

7 Fads, Trends, Icons Fad – Any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior's being perceived as novel in some way. A fad is said to “catch on” when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. The behavior will normally face quickly once the perception of the novelty is gone. By nature, a fad is temporary.

10 Trend Trend A Pattern of gradual change in a condition, output, or process. It has the potential of becoming a long-term influence on the future of a market. It has the potential to last for decades.

13 Icon A symbol, logo, picture, building or image that is readily recognized and generally represents an object or concept with great cultural significance to a wide cultural group. These are often heavily influence by the mass media.

16 Listing Popular Cultural Artifacts
With your group, make a list of as many popular cultural artifacts that you can generate. This is for participation points this week.

17 Asking Questions: Inquiry Based Learning
Group: Formulate as MANY questions as you can about the artifact your group is given. This is for participation points this week.

18 Homework Reflection for Project One: Due: Sunday, Sept. 24 by 11 pm on Eli Continue to think about popular cultural artifacts that you could focus on for this essay. In addition, use your time to research arguments surrounding these artifacts that could potentially be the focus of your essay.
