1
The Nervous System
2
Function – to coordinate and control body’s activities = regulation.
Allows body to respond to stimuli Structures 1. Central Nervous System: - brain - spinal cord 2. Peripheral Nervous System - nerves leading away from cns
4
Nerve Cells - Neurons
5
3. Interneurons – connect sensory and motor neurons
3 types of neurons: 1. Sensory – carry impulses from sense organs to brain and spinal cord 2. Motor – carry impulses from brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands 3. Interneurons – connect sensory and motor neurons
6
Nerve impulse transmission
7
Stimulus – Response Pathway
8
Effects of Drugs on the Nervous System
Stimulants – increase the release of some neurotransmitters in the brain. - afterwards there is a lack of neurotransmitters and feeling of depression
9
Antidepressants – some work by blocking neurotransmitter receptors so the signal will not be transmitted.
