Retiring to Galilee – Matthew 4:12, 17; Mark 1:14-15; Luke 3:19-20; Luke 4:14-15; John 4:1-54 Preaching in Capernaum – Matthew 4:13-16, 18-25; 8:14- 17; Mark 1:16-39; Luke 4:31-44; 5:1-11

2 Jesus introduces “living water”
John 4:10-14 Jesus introduces “living water” Jesus said if you knew who I was, you’d be asking Me for a drink of “living water.” Jeremiah 2:13; 17:13 Just like Nicodemus, this woman is having a difficult time understanding spiritual concepts with a fleshly mindset. “You have nothing to draw with … where then do you get that living water?”

3 Jesus introduces “living water”
John 4:10-14 Jesus introduces “living water” Her logic is that “our father Jacob” needed something to draw out the water, are You “greater” than him? Interesting – the Greek word for “greater” means “larger (literally or figuratively, specifically in age).” (Strong) See John 8:53

4 Jesus introduces “living water”
John 4:10-14 Jesus introduces “living water” Jesus’ response: John 4:13-14, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again …” How long do the blessings of this life satisfy? The same can be said of our food. Ecclesiastes 6:7; Isaiah 55:1-2

5 Jesus introduces “living water”
John 4:10-14 Jesus introduces “living water” Jesus’ response: John 4:14, “… but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him …” “Shall never thirst” “Will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life” Man has needs far beyond just food and water! Psalms 107:9; Isaiah 49:10; John 6:27, 35, 48-51, ; 7:37-38; Revelation 21:6; 22:17 There’s something more to life. Luke 12:23

6 Jesus introduces “living water”
John 4:15 Jesus introduces “living water” The woman’s response: Still with a fleshly mindset, she seeks the water Jesus offered so she wouldn’t have to: Be physically thirsty. John 6:34, “Lord always give us this bread.” Come to this well to get her water. What are we looking to the Lord to do for us? Mark 10:36, 51

7 Jesus introduces Himself
John 4:16-19 Jesus introduces Himself Jesus speaks of her marital situation and in so doing: Proves who He is by knowing things about her that He shouldn’t know. Points out her sinful condition and her need for such living water. Addresses the need this living water was designed for. Luke 5:8; John 8:11.

8 Jesus introduces Himself
John 4:16-19 Jesus introduces Himself Having met someone who had told her “all the things that I have done” (verses 29 and 39); she now concludes that Jesus is a “prophet” and worthy of the title “Sir.” (from the Greek “kurios”; most often translated “Lord”; a “title of honor; expressive of respect and reverence, with which servants salute their master” (Thayer); John 13:13)

9 The woman introduces the topic of worship
John 4:20-24 Changing topics? Would you feel exposed? (Hebrews 4:12-13) Shift from a very personal discussion to a very public one. John 4:20 Mount Gerizim, only a little way from Sychar. On this mountain they had built a temple somewhat similar to the one in Jerusalem. This was one of the main subjects of controversy between them and the Jews. The old Samaritan Pentateuch, or five books of Moses, has the word "Gerizim" instead of "Ebal" in Deut 27:4. On this account, as well as because the patriarchs are mentioned as having worshipped in Shechem, they supposed that that was the proper place on which to erect the temple. 10 The woman introduces the topic of worship
John 4:20-24 A long-standing source of division between Samaritans and Jews. Deuteronomy 11:29; 27:11ff; Joshua 8:33 “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain …” What mountain? “You say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship” Deuteronomy 12:5, 11; 1 Kings Chapter 8 John 4:20 Mount Gerizim, only a little way from Sychar. (Barnes' Notes)

11 The woman introduces the topic of worship
John 4:20-24 How does Jesus answer? Rather than deal with well over a thousand years of history, Jesus said “an hour is coming” (“and now is” – verse 23) when that question will not matter. “Neither” here “nor” there. (Barnes' Notes)

14 Jesus’ response to the woman’s question about where to worship
John 4:20-24 Jesus told the woman, “You worship that which you do not know” (verse 22). What did that mean? 2 Kings 17:27-41 (note verse 34) “We that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.” – Romans 3:1-2; 9:4-5
