1
Evaluation of CCM river and catchment database
By Albrecht Wirthmann, GISCO, Eurostat 12/5/2004
2
Purpose Evaluation of CCM river and catchment database
Integration into GISCO reference db Usage as reference dataset for WFD
3
Data Description Digital Elevation model 100 – 250 – 1000m resolution
Surface water areas CORINE land cover, GISCO lakes (1:3 Mill.), PELCOM 1000m Climate data, vegetation cover, soil, lithology

Characteristics
6
CCM and WSEU1M
7
CCM and EuroGlobalMap
8
Entella catchment
9
Positional Accuracy Comparison of point locations
Usage of reference data set Random selection of points Min. of 20 points Determination of distortions Calculation of Root Mean Square Error Calculation of Accuracy
10
General considerations
No reference data set for catchments Coincidence of river confluences with catchment boundaries
11
Applied method IMAGE 2000 as reference data set
Random Selection of river nodes with EuroGlobalMap network Comparison of node locations of CCM and IMAGE 2000

Results
23
Conclusions Only catchment dataset on European level
CCM resolution superior to WSEU1M CCM more accurate as WSEU1M CCM river network more dense than EGM Total Accuracy: 2662m, 1: 2,5 Mill. Resolution: Mean size 21km², 1: 500,000 Problems of delimitation in flat areas
24
Conclusions Usage as reference for major catchments
Problems with accuracy of river courses Systematic validation and correction necessary Integration of existing hydrographic network
