1 COMMA RULE #1: Compound Sentences
Use commas in compound sentences to separate independent clauses* when they are joined by a conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so, because). Example: Napoleon wanted to eat the tater tots but food wasn’t allowed in class. , *Contain subject and predicate; can stand alone as its own sentence.

2 Comma Rule #1: Examples , Taylor Swift loves cookies but she loves her cats even more. Spongebob went over to Patrick’s house and invited him to go jellyfishing. Essays can be annoying yet all Ms. Herrera’s students love them. ,

3 COMMA RULE #2:Introductory Clauses/Phrases
*“Set the stage” for the main part of the sentence; usually start with “after, although, because, before, if, since, though, until, when, etc… Use a comma after introductory clauses or phrases*. Example: After performing some awesome dog tricks Coconut smiled as he waited to get a delicious treat. , YUM!
