What is Shared lives The joint statement from Shared Lives Plus and Care Quality Commission 2010, gives this description: SL is an alternative and highly flexible form of accommodation and/or care or support inside or outside of the Shared lives carer’s home. SL arrangements are set up and supported by SL schemes and the care and accommodation people receive is provided by ordinary individuals, couples or families in the local community. This alternative enables individuals taking up a Shared Lives opportunity and the Shared Lives carer’s to enjoy shared activities and life experiences -Shared Lives Tower Hamlets is an alternative approach to traditional day opportunities, respite and long term living arrangement. -It is regulated by the Care Quality Commission -Supports individuals who rely on the help and support of others to maximize their potential and maintain a sense of independence. -Shared Lives Tower Hamlets provides person centered, family based care with a support plan built around what the person likes to do -The individual continues to live in the local area, maintaining family contacts and friendships.

Who can access this service and what types of support can Shared Lives Provide?
Who can live with a Shared Lives Carer? Adults with learning disabilities who are eligible for services from London Borough of Tower Hamlets Types of Support Long term- Individuals can choose to live with a shared Lives Carer and their family on a long term basis. Respite- Individuals can choose to spend a night, weekend or a few days as a break from where they live Day time support- Individuals can choose to just spend the day with one of our families Long-term arrangements – An individual with an eligible support need will move into a Shared Lives carers home and live with them as part of their family. The Shared Lives carer will provide all support that the individual requires and the individual will live as part of the carers family and network. Long-term arrangements can be an alternative to traditional residential or supported living services for people who need support to live the lives they choose. Respite arrangements – An individual with an eligible support need, who lives in another supported environment (usually with their own family), will stay with a Shared Lives short breaks carer for an agreed period of time. During the stay the Shared Lives short breaks carer will provide all support that the individual requires and the individual will stay as part of the carers family. Short break arrangements can be an alternative to traditional building based respite services. Day support arrangements – An individual with an eligible support need will be supported by a Shared Lives Carer for a short period of time during the day (not overnight) to enable a break for the main carer or to support the user to undertake an agreed activity or outcome based task. In addition, day support arrangements can provide outreach support for a previously placed individual who has moved on but still requires some support. During the stay the Shared Lives day support carer will provide all support that the individual requires as part of the family home and their family network.
