Annex 1 Covers 10 new Member States
To be inserted in NUTS Regulation 1059/2003 Based on previous “Statistical Regions” Poland and Hungary introduced NUTS 1 Latvia changed NUTS 3 regions Errors in spelling of names corrected

Annexes 2 and 3 Complete for 25 EU countries (replacement)
Administrative units – important for the possibility to change NUTS Smaller administrative units – only 1 level is mentioned in annex 3, normally this is LAU 2

European Parliament may propose changes Council can approve the act by qualified majority Council has made an informal consultation with Member States (NSIs involved) 15/10/2004 Final version to be published in Official Journal

Regional statistical data
Codes as in NUTS 2003 / EU25 already in use All data deliveries should follow these codes If there are code changes in the final version of the NUTS amendment, Eurostat will update its databases and ask MS to use the final codes

Next opportunity for revisions
NUTS frozen for a minimum of 3 years New MS: Only 2 years freezing period in the first round Commission can propose changes to NUTS in 2006 Any change will take effect on 1/1/2008

Statistical regions Defined for EFTA and for 3 candidate countries: BG, RO, TR New CCs will be added after agreement on regions with Eurostat Bulgaria will have 2 level 1 regions from 1 January 2005 Romania – need for level 1 regions! New version of “Statistical Regions” will be published by Eurostat

Conclusions For information to delegates:
NUTS is in the process to be amended due to enlargement In practice, NUTS 2003 / EU25 is already in use and all regional data deliveries should respect the new codes Next window of opportunity to change NUTS is in 2006, with effect from 1/1/2008 Romania should propose level 1 regions
