1 Checking the Projector
Can you see this? The owner of a magnificent 1956 Chevrolet convertible, wrote to say he had restored the car to perfection over the last few years.

3 On a very warm summer afternoon he decided to take his car to town
On a very warm summer afternoon he decided to take his car to town. It needed gas, as the gauge was practically on empty, but he wanted ice cream, so he headed first to his favorite ice cream shop. He had trouble finding a parking space and had to park the car down a side street.

4 He noticed a group of young guys standing around smoking cigarettes and eyeing the car rather covetously. He was a bit uneasy leaving it there, but people often take interest in such an old and well-preserved car, so he went off to enjoy his ice cream.

5 He called the police and reported the theft.
The line at the ice cream shop was long and it took him quite a while to return to his car. When he did, his worst fears were realized... his car was gone. He called the police and reported the theft.

6 It was unharmed and he was relieved.
About ten minutes later the police called him to say they had found the car abandoned near a gas station a few miles out of town. It was unharmed and he was relieved.

7 It seems just before he called, the police had received a call from a young woman who was an employee at a self-service gas station. She told them that three young men had driven in with this beautiful old convertible. One of them came to the window and prepaid for 20 dollars worth of gas.

8 Then all three of them walked around the car
Then all three of them walked around the car. Then they all got in the car and drove off, without filling the tank. The question is, why would anybody steal a car, pay for gas that they never pumped and then abandon the car later and walk away?

11 Questions?

12 1. Did anything else happen here? (When? Who?)
3 Guiding Questions: 1. Did anything else happen here? (When? Who?) 2. Any cultural associations with this place? 3. Why did Jesus choose this place?

13 Concluding Stories in Capernaum
Then, on to Nazareth

14 Capernaum harbor

15 Matt. 9:9-13—Jesus calls Matthew the tax collector & eats with him
9 As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed Him.

16 10 And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

17 Reclining around a “Triclinium”?

18 12 But when He heard it, He said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

20 Luke 8:41-56--heals a woman with a 12-year hemorrhage
And raises Jairus’ daughter to life 41 And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus’ feet, he implored Him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

21 Crowded narrow streets. Followed by a crowd?

22 How quickly could Jesus get to Jairus’ house?

23 As Jesus went, the people pressed around Him
As Jesus went, the people pressed around Him. 43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood (ῥύσις--Literally: “a fountain of blood”) for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.

24 What could she not do according to Jewish Law and tradition if she had a menstrual flow or blood flow for 12 years?

25 Leviticus 15:19-28 19 “When a woman has a flow of blood and there is a flow of blood in her body, she shall be in her menstrual impurity for seven days, and whoever touches her shall be unclean until the evening.

26 Leviticus 15:20-28 20 And everything on which she lies during her menstrual impurity shall be unclean. Everything also on which she sits shall be unclean.

27 21 And whoever touches her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening. 22 And whoever touches anything on which she sits shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening.

28 23 Whether it is the bed or anything on which she sits, when he touches it he shall be unclean until the evening. 24 And if any man lies with her and her menstrual impurity comes upon him, he shall be unclean seven days, and every bed on which he lies shall be unclean.

29 25 “If a woman has a discharge of blood for many days, not at the time of her menstrual impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond the time of her impurity, all the days of the discharge she shall continue in uncleanness. As in the days of her impurity, she shall be unclean.

30 26 Every bed on which she lies, all the days of her discharge, shall be to her as the bed of her impurity. And everything on which she sits shall be unclean, as in the uncleanness of her menstrual impurity.

31 27 And whoever touches these things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening. 28 But if she is cleansed of her discharge, she shall count for herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean.

32 Lady, did you realize that
Dancing in the White Fire Lady, did you realize that you would be making Jesus unclean by touching Him?

33 Dancing in the White Fire Lady, did you realize that
people who knew your condition would be upset if you touched them on your way to Jesus?

34 Dancing in the White Fire
Hey, person in the crowd there in Capernaum, how would you react as she tried to push her way past you as she tried to get near Jesus?

35 After 12 years, would she have become used to it?

36 45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched Me
45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround You and are pressing in on You!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me, for I perceive that power has gone out from Me.”

37 Can power go out of Jesus without His knowing it?
Would He know where it went? What was the purpose of His question?

38 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before Him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

39 Did she actually make Jesus unclean by touching Him?
“she had been immediately healed.”

40 Does this mean the “faith healers” are right when they tell unhealed people that they didn’t have enough faith and that is why they were not healed? Any examples where Jesus heals people who are not identified as having faith in Him?

41 How did God use this horrible affliction to bring a blessing
to the woman? “Blessings in Disguise?” Jesus last words: “go in peace” How did Jesus use this “delay” to refine Jairus’ faith?

42 [Dancing in the White Fire] “What are you thinking?”
“Jairus, how are feeling while Jesus interrupts your 911 Call to attend to this woman instead of rushing to your house?” “What are you thinking?”

43 How would we feel if an ambulance is taking a family member with a heart attack to the hospital and they pull over to help a car accident victim?

44 Luke 8:49 While He was still speaking, someone from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.”

45 50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe,
and she will be well.”

46 51 And when He came to the house, He allowed no one to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child.

47 52 And all were weeping and mourning for her, but He said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead.

48 53 And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead.
How does this mocking reaction serve the glory of God? Why important? How many people have confirmed that she was dead?

49 54 But taking her by the hand He called, saying, “Child, arise.”
Mark 5:41 gives the Aramaic: 41 Taking her by the hand He said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”

50 Luke 8:55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once
Luke 8:55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And He directed that something should be given her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed, but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

51 Why would Jesus order them to give her something to eat?
Remind you of someone else?

52 Is there a common theme that emerges from the two interwoven stories?
A message for us?

53 Maybe as they excavate the rest of the site they will find Jairus’ house?
Unexcavated The excavated site is 1/3 of the ancient city.
